We've got some ancient, overgrown apple trees that still produce sorry looking apples that the deer eat. Do you suppose they could be rejuvenated and turned back into "working" trees? We've also got a huge, old pear tree, but that one's out of the question because it's so tall I can't get anywhere near a branch. It produces small, hard-as-a-rock pears that fall on the grown - also enjoyed by the deer.
