How would HIV make a good weapon - it takes years to kill. Why would we spend so much on searching for vaccines, cures and treatments if we created it? How did we invent a retrovirus in the 1950s or earlier? GAAH!

AIDS woo exists at the nexus of pharma woo, minority/persecuted-group woo, and anti-government woo, and uses the logic and arguments of all three:

* AIDS exists so that Big Pharma can make money from drugs. HIV doesn't cause AIDS, either.

* AIDS was created to kill blacks / gays / etc, and the proof is other things the government has done to harm these groups.

* AIDS is a tool of the illuminati / international bankers / etc to keep the poor countries of the world in line.

There are people who think the Nazis had moon bases in the 1940s. Probably some of the same people who think we faked the moon landings. No, it doesn't make any sense.

You could make the case (well, you shouldn't, make the case, but you could if you were a wingnut) that it's actually a highly effective weapon for decimating the population in certain poverty-stricken-yet-resource-rich nations whilst only causing a manageable health problems in wealthier nations with better sex education and access to contraceptives.
