Sometimes I really worry about the future of this country between the fundies and then the absolute MORONS we see on this board..Absolute proof of a conspiracy by Big Pharma to kill 200,000 people-- there is someone who invented a cure for cancer and a cure for HIV but its being surpressed..the proof? A youtube clip. I couldn't even watch that tripe.
No wonder this country is in such bad shape, all the morons who don't even have enough scientific knowledge to know that cancer is a whole bunch of diseases so finding A cure is about as likely as finding a unicorn! GAAAAH!

There is some serious idiocy there. I watched the video and the guy says he was using viruses to infect cancer cells/HIV infected cells targeting them for destruction by the immune system. That's been a theory for getting rid of tumors for a long time that doesn't seem to have worked out yet. (We all develop abnormal cells but they usually undergo apoptosis or express proteins on their surface that the immune system recognizes as non self and are subsequently destroyed. Or you get a tumor if they evade the immune system.) The problem is getting a virus to infect only those cells. And with clinical trials- what if the infected tumor cells aren't destroyed but continue rapidly multiplying and churn out shit loads of virus and you die? Oops.

I don't know how that could work out with HIV. Does CD4+ T cell activation by APCs (antigen presenting cells) result in more virus production? Maybe you would have to make sure the virus used to infect to "cure" HIV would interact with MHC class 1 so it would be presented to CD8+ T cells, preventing or lessening activation of CD4+ cells if that's an issue. Since there are polymorphisms at the MHC antigen binding sites it would probably have to be tailored to each person. Who's got a PhD in immunology? Wait, I can try to ask one of about 5 people tomorrow at work 2 of which work with HIV.
