| Apparently the Ends justify the Means so it's ok to use woo because of the placebo effect. |
|
So say the usual suspects in the Alt-Med thread in GD. Ad in the references to "dogmatic scientific orthodoxy" and "but they laughed at Copernicus, Galileo, and Fulton!!!".

"But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown."

| 2. Dogmatic scientific orthodoxy, as we all know, |
|
means "science is hard and stuff, it makes my brain hurt." Now I'm curious, I'll have to look and hopefully not get involved. I'd just be banging my head against a wall.

You might want to read my post about the woman who died from cancer because she "knew" the alternate stuff works.

| 10. This reminds me of a thread in the Healthscare Lounge a few years ago |
|
In it, one poster defended the use of placebo by exactly this same "ends justify the means" reasoning. When I argued that the healthcare provider would still be a liar and potentially engaging in fraud, the DUer snarkily asked if I'd told my then-two-year old that Santa Claus isn't real, either.
My equally snarky answer was that it's one thing to tell a fairy tell to a small child; it's quite another to tell a fairy tale to a nominal adult. Presumably, the latter should be able to deal with the truth without wrapping it in rainbows.
