| "Recessions don't just happen, they are created by Republicans" OMG, THE STUPID!!! |
|
Ran into this in the Bernanke LBN thread. Somebody give that poster a Macro-Econ textbook and tell him/her to look up the business cycle. Geez, I hate it when people think EVERYTHING is a conspiracy. :eyes:

| 1. They aren't created by Republicans, especially when they are worldwide... |
|
however, it *is* true that right-wing, laissez-faire economic policies generally make them worse.

Therefore here on DU, it is not well understood and it becomes...black and white...good vs. evil etc...

| 4. I've noticed that people tend to look for people to scapegoat instead of understanding the science. |
|
It's like people just don't "get" that most things in society, especially most bad things that happen. are "ordered" by no-one in particular but are instead are unintended consequences of other policies and collective behavior.

| 5. they are the left wing version of the fundies in some ways |
|
RW says everything happens because its god's plan or someone made god mad..On the left bad things don't just happen its because someone made it happen. I think that in general, alot of people in society today cannot accept that simply put "shit happens" sometimes.

| 6. Recessions are normal parts of the business cycle |
|
but what those incoherent folks are really trying to say is that the Republicans create the conditions for depressions.
They've got a point.

sometimes people (me included) have trouble expressing exactly what they mean in a forum where give and take can be very limited

| 8. The thing is, the US would still would have had a recession under a President Gore |
|
Economic indicators in late 2000 were already pointing to likely GDP contraction in 2001. Like others have pointed out, the 2001-2 recession would likely not have been so deep, and the recovery would have been more expedient under a Gore administration.
