TCM Schedule for Thursday, June 9 -- TCM Spotlight: Drive-in Double Features
Sorry I'm late -- real life intervened with reel life.

A nurse discovers that the children she's caring for are murder targets.

The volcano shown at the beginning was Paricutin, a cinder cone volcano in the Mexican state of Michoacán, which erupted in 1943 and was active for about a decade.

The volcano began as a fissure in a cornfield owned by a P'urhépecha farmer, Dionisio Pulido, on February 20, 1943. Pulido, his wife, and their son all witnessed the initial eruption of ash and stones first-hand as they ploughed the field. The volcano grew quickly, reaching five stories tall in just a week, and it could be seen from afar in a month. Much of the volcano's growth occurred during its first year, while it was still in the explosive pyroclastic phase. The nearby villages Paricutín (after which the volcano was named) and San Juan Parangaricutiro were both buried in lava and ash; the residents relocated to vacant land nearby.

A giant anti-matter bird invades the Earth's atmosphere.
Dir: Fred F. Sears Cast: Jeff Morrow, Mara Corday, Morris Ankrum.
74 min, TV-PG

In an interview, star Jeff Morrow said that neither he nor anyone on the film saw the title "monster" until they went to the film's premiere in Morrow's home town. It turned out that producer Sam Katzman had contracted with a low-budget model-maker in Mexico City to construct the "Giant Claw" and no one in the cast or crew had any idea it would come out looking as bizarre and, frankly, laughable as it did. Morrow said that the audience roared with laughter every time the "monster" made an appearance, and he wound up slinking in embarrassment out of the theater before the film was over so that no one who knew him would recognize him.

A cosmetics executive's search for eternal beauty turn her into a monster.
