Yay!! We finally got a DVR!!

Now I can record all those middle-of-the-night oldies I love, and watch them during the day!!

1. You're going to love it!

And you're gonna get really spoiled! We spent the night in San Antonio last night and my husband reached for the remote so that he could fast-forward through the commercials. ;) We hardly ever watch live programming any more just so that we can skip the commercials. Have fun!

I remember when they first came out in our area, Mr. ld wasn't all gung-ho about having a DVR, but I was really excited and went and got the thing, hooked it up and read the booklet before he got home that day. After about a day, Mr. ld was a believer, and didn't know why we hadn't gotten one before! We use it ALL the time now, and love always having something that we want to watch available. Like Longhorn said, another big plus is fast forwarding through the commercials. Mr. ld's parents actually got an additional hard-drive to be able to record even MORE stuff than the original DVR they got...

3. We also just bought a DVD Recorder.

Our old one was a player only. Trouble is, it comes with a booklet of
30+ pages of instructions on how to record, and Mr Matilda is going to
have to do some serious study to figure it out, so for the moment it's
play only. To record, we'll just continue to use the video for now.

The beauty of the new one is that it's multi-zone, so I can now buy DVDs
of classics that have never been released here - we really are starved
for classic releases. I'll no longer feel deprived.

4. MULTI-ZONE?!

:woohoo: That certainly is good news and opens the field wide.

I remember ordering a British videocassette for a friend who of course arranged for it to be put into U.S. format. I wish we had a universal system, period, and didn't have to go through this business of getting just the right format.

5. Yes - there are a few on the market now.

You pay a bit more, but it's worth it to be able to watch DVDs from
other zones. It is possible to reconfigure single-zone videos to play
another zone, but it's illegal, and if you do it, you lose your warranty.
I think the same rules apply in the U.S. - you can do it, but it's not
legal.

Video recorders here have all been able to play both PAL and NTSC videos
for a long time, so buying videos from the States didn't pose problems.
But the zoning business, which is quite ridiculous, is another story
altogether.
