1. Cliff Burton- a piece of Metallica died with him :evilfrown: 2. Les Claypool 3. Paul McCartney- say what you want about him; he was a solid bassist 4. Nick Oliveri & Scott Reeder- Kyuss- both were great bassists. 5. Mark Sandman-Morphine- can't beat 2-string slide bass.

|
But you nailed it. All in all, that three year period was the Beatles' golden age.

|
After that, as a solo guy he neglected his bass playing, at least until Band on the Run.

Dave Holland, Ray Brown, Rocco Prestia, and my current favorite, Larry Grenadier. 5 isn't enough room to list nearly any of the great ones, but I tried, at least I got Ray on there.

I surprised myself by putting Phil Lesh on the list, but I've been listening to my old tapes after a 15 year GD sabbatical and I gotta say this guy is an awesome bassist!

A lot of people here bust on the Grateful Dead (you know who you are, bastids), but Lesh was definitely the anchor in that lineup. When Garcia and Weir couldn't figure out where they were going during a jam, Lesh was able to bring them back.

mmm, mmm... loves my Meters. I'm not sure if he's still doing the Runnin' Pardners thing- been a while since I've seen them around. You can certainly count on a fun show wherever he's sitting in. I've seen Astral Project a couple of times, those guys are incredible. I must mention Reggie Scanlan from the Rads, solid. and here's one for you... remember who played bass for The Cold?

... oh yeah, Vance DeGeneres. :D I went to a lot of their shows back in the day (I live a few blocks from Jimmy's, close by Dave Malone). You ever see The Cold, The Meters etc. play on the Riverboat President? Man, I miss going to shows while cruising the Mississippi. Fats Domino was another great one for the riverboat shows.

But damn, the music's good around here. Always has been. I caught about ten minutes of that special on WYES(?)a few weeks ago, some cool stuff about the old Warehouse... during the heydays I was a minor. These days, I only get across the long bridge when family and friends come to town... and for Jazz Fest.
Don't forget... Hoaky rules! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

How can that possibly be? Best living rock and avant garde bass player alive, right now. Up there with Steve Swallow in the avantgarde category.
Also, no Daryl Jones?

He wasn't even playing good bass lines for a keyboardist playing with the off hand. Not only isn't what he did unique, (any decent piano player could do that), but it limits what textures he could otherwise add to the band's sound. He should have gotten over himself and hired a bass player. The Professor

I do both too! But, the Manzarek thing always stuck in my throat. They should have just hired a bass player. And i say that as someone who is first and foremost a piano player. (Piano, then guitar, then bass.) The Professor
