| Drummers: what does this notation symbol mean? |
|
In the hi-hat part, there's parenthesis around some of the xs. My educated guess is that it's open hi-hat. Thoughts?

(i am not a drummer)
but from my experience in listening to drummers/directors in jazz ensembles, +/- over the note denotes open/closed, does it not?
are the notes tied over? it might mean to hold it out for that value, but not strike it.

Maybe if I saw it in context.
Can you paste a sample?

A very light note, popular in jazz.
