| I just got logic express 8 |
|
My first forway into software based recording.
If I am simply playing a synth track from my Yamaha keyboard with the arpeggiator on so it just repeats the notes I played, is this considered an "audio" recording or is it "midi" for purposes of track selection. I'm ready to read the manual, but this question just struck me.

| 1. Ok. After research I answered my own question |

So. I would need something like a Yamaha UX16 MIDI/USB Converter to get data to my mac. But what is the benefit of midi, when I can simply send audio signals from the keyboard into logic 8 via audio interface?

| 2. A MIDI sequence would take up a lot less memory and processor resources, then... |
|
...an audio track.
I don't know if that would be a concern.
It also may be easier to alter the pitch or tempo of a sequence then an audio track. (Although I've heard that Logic makes that pretty easy to do also.)

| 3. the advantage of MIDI is that you can go in and edit |

the information afterwards. You can change the patch on the instrument you're triggering - you can send the information to a different instrument altogether.
Once you have an audio recording, you're pretty well stuck with it. Didn't get the timing quite right on that one note? Tough. With MIDI, you can go in and fix it. Once you get it right, then you can convert that MIDI recording into an audio file by playing it back and recording it on another track. This saves CPU usage, because playing back audio doesn't use as much CPU as running a MIDI plug in.
