2. As a bass player I have had to both play with them and carry them for

years, both the suitcase and stage models, as well as the dreaded 88-key ship's anchor. I never like the tinkly sound of the thing (I always preferred the more pianistic tone of the Wurlitzer), and don't understand why so many piano players used them. Perhaps the weight of the keys felt right, and maybe they actually liked that bell-like timbre. Anyway, now that there are so many electrics with real piano sound and good action, I thankfully have not been on a bandstand with a Rhodes for quite some time.

3. Used One For Years - Never Really Liked It

Back in 1981, i switched to a Kustom K-88, which was a very early digital piano based upon Chowning's original FM synthesis techniques. It felt better than a Rhodes and sounded far more like a piano then any other affordable keyboard at that time. But, it weighed about 200 pounds, so it wasn't that gig friendly. It did fold into its own flight case, and had a low profile and flat top, so it was easy to stack other synths on top.

The Rhodes had that weird rounded top thing, and i thought the tines were kind of fragile. Also, the early 70's vintage had some counterweighting problems that caused the keys to lag a bit when playing quickly. The result was that you could catch the hammer weight coming back into your fingers on a trill or mordent. It was a really strange feeling and made playing it harder.

The day i sold it, i didn't shed any tears.

4. Nowadays you can get "the sound" from a synth

with none of the "downside"....

5. I played one in my band in the early 80s - Loved it!

I was a Steely Dan freak and loved their sound.

I left my rhodes with a friend back in PA when I moved here to CA.

I miss it!

If you're into Steely Dan check my band at www.pretzellogic.org we are a Cincy based Steely Dan tribute. Oh, and Fender Rhodes yes. I play with a keyboardist who uses a Rhodes when there is room and a Nord synth when there isn't. The Nord is good but the real Rhodes wins.
