| Strangest musical performance |
|
FM's keyboard player Nash the Slash broke away from the group and went solo.
I saw him perform in a hall in London, Ontario in 1976. The stage was festooned with creepy Goth stuff. He came out looking vaguely like Alice Cooper but played kewl stuff.
Highlight of the evening - "Smoke on the Water" played on the mandolin.
One little thing. Nash the Slash is an electronic musician. Behind him was a tower of Modular Moogs. He had the mandolin piped through a bunch of frequency followers and envelope shapers. What came out was four octaves lower and loud enough to peel paint.

Saw him back in around 1975 in a small room in Chicago. Just him, bass, and drums. The drummer only had a snare, kick and afloor tom, but about 30 kinds of cymbals and cup gongs. The bass player had a standup and a fretless electric through a Minibrute. Kirk played about 12 different types of reeded horns. At one point (mayb 25% into the show, but then pretty much the rest of the night), he played two at the same time (a soprano sax and oboe) in perfect parallel fifths, but at bebop speed. It really took a lot of focus to stay with where they were, because the music was highly fragmented and experimental.
Near the end of the show, he played three "saxes" at the same time. A tenor and then two sort of antique "pre-Sax" reeded instruments. One he just kept on a drone, while he played the other two or one and just switched it around. So, the drone note was a different note (one of the three open horns), and then played the other two.
Pretty amazing stuff. The Professor

I saw Nash twice. He was wrapped like a mummy wearing alternately a fez and/or riot helmet. Awsome show.
also Fred Frith, Dressed like some gangster, he had a large bulbous mass attached to ths throat with black tape, it was some kind of mic. not to mention his usual weirdness hammering screws into the body of his already splinterd guitar at 90+ db. etc.
