Louis Farrakhan thread in GD
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 09:00 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
The tone of the whole thread is how bad Louis Farrakhan is, how racist, etc. etc. etc. But I wonder if some of that is that some of what he says reacts with what people know deep down. Personally, I feel resentment towards that thread. I feel like the slams on Farrakhan extend past the man himself. Im insulted that after such an awful thing happened, with such grotesque mishandling, people still dismiss. Louis Farrakhan is not the only one who has asked this question. Doesn't the fact that the AA community support for Bush has dropped so much suggest that many feel that if the actual event wasn't motivated by race, the pathetic way it was handled was?

What do you think?

1. They don't understand.
I think Cat Woman said it best..in so many words, had it not been for types like the current administration, Farrakhan would not have much of an audience!

3. Anyone not-white that makes the status quo nervous or uncomfortable
is immediately called "crazy" and written off. Considering the things done to black people in RECENT history, e.g. lynchings, illegal land seizures of former slaves (google "torn from the land"), the Tuskegee syphilis experiment, major race riots (Tulsa, 1920, Rosewood, 1923), Mississippi R. flood of 1927 to name a few. Even in the present, even with all factors equal, black people will be discriminated against in employment, loans, housing, etc.

This is supposed to be the 21st Century?

4. It's quite fascinating
to watch the stealth racists out themselves on all the Farrakhan threads.

I'm back going to New Orleans in a few hours. It will be the first time I've been home, and I rue what I am about to see. I believe my home has minimal damage, but my beautiful city!... :(

7. I'm sorry to hear
:(

New Orleans will return. This is the 8th time in its history it's suffered major damage. (Hurricane of 1721, fires of 1788 and 1794, flood of 1927, recent hurricanes Betsy, Camille, Katrina, and Rita)

Hang in there!

11. There was a thread...
that specifically spoke of self segregation and pretty much blamed poor aas for failing to unite the poor. The scary scary thing was that last I checked about 16 people had recommended it for greatest. Someone even thanked the OP for posting the brave truth.

Best wishes going back home.

13. I remember that one
I just "loved" the whole idea highlighted in that thread that it is racist to recognize racism because everybody has a sob story.

I missed that one. Do you have a link or title? It doesn't appear to be on the Greatest Page any more.

10. You are right
There is a very nasty undercurrent. I think I'll post something longish on the end of my thread today.
