The conference is going on this week (7/11/09 - 7/16/09) with nary a mention in the media except on black radio and the black media. In the past, CSPAN would air many of these conventions including the NACCP, Urban League, Blacks in Government, etc., and on occasion would even broadcast some sessions live... But it seems nowadays, they feel they have bigger fish by covering mostly wingnut (Heritage Foundation, AEI, Cato, Hoover, etc) nonsense. They sometimes eventually air selected sessions later in the year or during a slow news weekend, so I'll be on the lookout.
Thank goodness for XM radio station 169 "The Power" though. From what I can gather, almost all of the hosts have been reporting live from the conference including Joe Madison, Warren Ballatine, & the Rev. Al Sharpton, and America Left's (XM 167) Mark Thompson has also been broadcasting from the floor.
Because of the historic centenial anniversary, I understand that many many current and past political figures (including current and past members of Congress), activists, past NAACP Presidents, and entertainers, have been in attendance during the week.
But most importantly, our President will be speaking before them on Thurs. July 16 during the 9 am - 12:30pm plenary session. How poignant can that be? I would hope one of the CSPANs shows it live since they do tend to broadcast Presidential events and this is about as historic an event as can be. But this may run counter to their airing of the Sotomayer hearings should that still be going on Thurs. morning and Congress has a morning session scheduled (which would mean CSPAN & CSPAN2 would be out of the running for live airing, and it would leave CSPAN3 to decide who is more important - a SCOTUS nominee or the POTUS. ;) ). Of course they could ignore both as is typical when it comes to "minorities", but we shall see.
