1. Mariah Carey plays a frumpy woman!

I just saw a little clip and she looks convincing. So many stars could be better actresses if they just dropped the "star" quality and played regular people. Let's hope this gets her past "Glitter" opprobrium.

That said, I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the "Black misery" genre. It seems to me that Hollywood produces either Black upper class fantasies or Black misery.

Sometimes I feel sorry for Oprah because she seems to be so traumatized by her childhood, that she's obsessed with stories about the most miserable elements of Black society, even though she's one of the richest women in the world.

The reason I love Spike Lee is that he makes movies about the classes that the majority of Black people are actually in -- the lower middle and working classes.
