Soldier dies after being hit by stolen truck

COLUMBUS, Ga. — A female solider stationed at Fort Benning has died of injuries sustained after her car was struck by a truck reported stolen earlier in Columbus.

Authorities have not released the name of the soldier killed Thursday.

The wreck followed a police chase of a stolen truck, but police say the chase had ended before the wreck. Columbus Police Lt. Bruce Whitehead said a van also was involved in the wreck.

Officers arrested 17-year-old Stayce Devon Walker of Columbus at an apartment where witnesses said he fled on foot from the burning pickup truck. Authorities have charged him with theft by receiving a stolen vehicle and say other charges are pending.
