Trash still flowed from bins Thursday at the U.S. Navy's support site base in Gricignano, even after the Italian military intervened. The construction company Mirabella, responsible for building and maintaining the support site, is clearing away the mounds that have gone uncollected for about two weeks. By the end of Thursday, officials anticipated having 40 percent of it cleared. Late on Wednesday, the Italian military was called in to help haul away garbage. NAPLES, Italy — Italian construction company Mirabella invested 150,000 euros to build a temporary trash storage facility near Gricignano to help the U.S. Navy base and the town rid its streets of festering garbage, the company’s leader said.
But it’s a short-term, emergency fix, warned Francesco Coppola, managing director of Mirabella, which built the support site base, leases the buildings to the Navy and is responsible for maintenance.
The facility can hold upward of 5,000 tons — about one year worth of garbage collected from both the U.S. Navy base and the town of Gricignano.
“We are working as hard as we can, as best we can,” Coppola said. “The site is just a safety valve to be used in times of crisis.”
The temporary facility is slated to receive garbage Tuesday, after inspections by Italian building and health officials to ensure it meets standards, he said.
