Okinawa Marine faces counterfeiting charge Stars and Stripes
Pacific edition, Sunday, March 2, 2008
CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Okinawa police on Friday forwarded a counterfeiting charge against a Marine to the Naha Public Prosecutors Office.
The Marine remains in military custody, a police spokesman said.
His name will not be released until custody under the U.S.-Japan status of forces agreement is transferred to Japanese authorities, the spokesman said.
According to police, the Marine passed dozens of bogus $20 bills at off-base stores in the central Okinawa city of Uruma, which hosts several Marine bases. Marines were unavailable to confirm the report late Friday.
Last week a Marine official said the investigation by Okinawa and military authorities was ongoing but would not comment further.
