The Air Force will begin requiring a computer-based survival, evasion, resistance and escape course for all airmen, the Air Force announced Thursday.
Airmen must complete the four-hour course, called SERE 100, by June 30, according to the Air Force announcement. Airmen will be required to update their currency on the course every 20 months.
Guard and Reserve commanders may extend the deadline until Oct. 30, the announcement says.
The course can be accessed through the Air Force Portal or by going to the mobility and readiness section here.
The beefed-up training has been in the works since August, when Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley directed Air Education and Training Command to come up with a SERE game plan to prepare airmen to work in dangerous environments. He and other Air Force leaders think that because the current wars in the Middle East have no traditional front lines, all deployed airmen are at risk of capture.
