CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — A Marine intelligence officer went on trial Wednesday on charges of obstruction of justice and making false statements in connection with a squad’s killings of 24 Iraqi men, women and children after a bomb attack on a military convoy killed a Marine.
A jury of seven officers was selected for the court-martial of 1st Lt. Andrew Grayson after questioning by prosecutors and defense attorneys that focused primarily on their knowledge of the case they gained through newspaper, television and radio reports.
Nearly all the Marines had either read or heard some report about the case.
The judge, Maj. Brian E. Kasprzyk, ordered opening statements to begin Thursday morning.
Grayson, of Springboro, Ohio, is the first of three defendants to go to trial in the case.
