NORFOLK, Va. — The Navy says the frigate Elrod will deploy from Norfolk Naval Station next week.

The 453-foot Elrod is scheduled to deploy Monday to the 6th Fleet.

Officials say the ship will operate in the Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic Ocean, participating in exercises, making diplomatic port calls and responding to emergencies.

The ship is named after Maj. Henry Elrod, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for defending Wake Island against invading Japanese forces on Dec. 23, 1941.
