OCEANSIDE, Calif. – It wasn’t long after Lance Cpl. Christian William Carney posted $1 million bail that the junior Marine and murder suspect was back in custody — this time in a military brig.
“He is in custody,” 1st Lt. Curtis Williamson, a 1st Marine Division spokesman at Camp Pendleton, confirmed Thursday. Carney, who was being held in the base brig, is under investigation on separate, unrelated charges, Williamson said, but details were not available.
Carney, 21, is one of two Marines who the Orange County District Attorneys’ office charged with murder in the shooting death of Pvt. Stephen Serrano, 20, whose body was found May 15 near an office and warehouse park in San Clemente, north of Camp Pendleton. Serrano had been shot in the chest.
Carney was arrested May 23 and pleaded not guilty May 27 in Orange County Superior Court. The Orange County Register reported on its Web site Thursday that Carney posted bail on Wednesday evening and was then taken into military custody.
Another Marine, Pvt. Alvin Reed Lovely, remains jailed in Orange County on $1 million bail. Lovely was on unauthorized leave when he was taken arrested at his home in Dallas, Texas, on May 28. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
