22nd MEU to start training for deployment

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Infantry troops will start training soon with other elements that will make up the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.

A spokesman said the MEU will be composed of about 2,000 people from the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment. The MEU also will include MV-22 Osprey aircraft from Marine Medium Tilt Rotor Squadron 263 and Marines from Combat Logistics Battalion 22.

The various units officially become one on Friday and begin six months of training together and with Navy ships that will carry them on their six-month deployment next year.

Col. Gareth F. Brandl will command the Marines.

The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed in August for six months and will be relieved by the 22nd.
