California to get Gold Star license plates

SACRAMENTO — California is joining 22 other states that have special license plates for survivors of those who died while serving in the military.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday signed a bill creating “Gold Star Family” plates, which feature a single star along with plate numbers.

The legislation allows survivors to bypass the usual process for specialized license plates, which normally are offered only after 7,500 people pay for them in advance.

Republicans senators Dave Cogdill and Jeff Denham, who authored the bill, say it also avoids using tax money. Instead, the legislation lets the state Department of Veterans Affairs collect donations to pay the $300,000 cost of creating the plates.

Survivors also won’t have to pay the usual annual fee for specialty license plates.
