Today, airmen working with convoys, security patrols, bomb disposal teams and other jobs that take them outside base gates often put on Nomex desert tan flight suits, pieces of Army uniforms and civilian gear to protect themselves from explosions or flames. That makes for a mix-and-match look.
But soon, airmen going outside the wire in Iraq and Afghanistan will put on fire-resistant gear camouflaged with the Air Force digital tiger stripes.
The gear is designed to be more comfortable in hot weather and more durable than the airman battle uniform.
Zippered shoulder pockets have been added to the blouse to give airmen stowage that won’t be blocked by body armor, and you’ll find sleeve pockets just above the wrists. Padding protects elbows.
The pants feature several sets of pockets along the waist and legs.
