Recruits at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, N.J., are being bused 30 minutes to Atlantic City to complete their shooting requirements after a reflection plate hanging from the ceiling crashed to the floor earlier this month.
Crew members from the cutter Vigorous were shooting in the range at the time of the incident, but none of the approximately 20 people in the vicinity were injured. The training facility has been closed since Oct. 2 when the top reflection plate, which keeps bullets from ricocheting, fell. The facility is expected to open in a few weeks after construction is complete, Cape May spokeswoman Chief Warrant Officer 2 Veronica Bandrowsky said.
In the meantime, recruits have been bused to the Federal Aviation Administration Center in Atlantic City, N.J., about 30 minutes from the base, for firing practice.
Recruits usually spend one full day in the range learning how to properly handle a sidearm and various firing techniques, as well as actual shooting practice and qualifications.
