FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Steve Beshear has ordered the activation of all Kentucky Army National Guard units and some Air National Guard units as the state continues to struggle with a crippling ice storm, the largest callup in state history.
In a news release Saturday, Beshear says he made the decision to ensure the safety and well-being of Kentucky’s citizens in the aftermath of this week’s winter storm that left more than a half-million Kentuckians without power and paralyzed most of the western Kentucky.
The activation means an additional 3,000 soldiers and airmen will join the efforts of 1,600 guardsmen who have already been pressed into service.
It exceeds troop levels for the 1997 flood, when 1,600 troops were called up, and Kentucky’s support of recovery efforts for Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with approximately 2,000 troops.
