RALEIGH, N.C. — About 4,000 soldiers from the North Carolina National Guard have started training in the California desert in preparation for deployment this spring to Iraq.
The members of the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team already have trained for three months in North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Mississippi. Guard spokesman Maj. Matt Handley said they began training this week at the Army’s National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif.
Training will be focused on counter insurgency operations, civil affairs and traditional combat.
After training is completed at Fort Irwin, the soldiers will return home for final deployment preparations and a short break before leaving for Iraq. The unit is expected to be among the last brigades sent to Iraq as the U.S. reduces forces there.
