JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — An MV-22 Osprey was forced to land Tuesday night after the engine on the left nacelle caught fire and caused significant damage, Marine officials said.
The pilot was able to safely land the aircraft at Camp Lejeune, N.C., said Maj. Shawn Haney, a 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing spokeswoman. None of the five crew members was injured, she said.
The aircrew was on a training flight when the engine caught fire. The Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C.-based Osprey is assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron 204.
The aircraft landed about 9 p.m. at a designated landing zone at Lejeune. The aircrew activated the onboard fire suppression systems, landed and evacuated the aircraft, Haney said. A local fire volunteer fire department and the Camp Lejeune Fire Department responded to the scene.
The cause of the mishap and the extent of the damage are under investigation.
