VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — A strange letter about biohazards forced Vandenberg Air Force Base’s medical clinic to close Tuesday, though the center reopened after investigators determined the letter contained no harmful substances.
Personnel with Vandenberg’s 30th Medical Group Clinic were briefly quarantined as investigators examined the letter with “random writing discussing a variety of biohazard topics,” according to the base’s public affairs office. The letter was about nine pages long and mainly touched on accusations against the government including, among other grievances, implanting microchips in the writer’s eyes.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents working out of a Santa Monica bureau have identified the individual. They believe he has composed similar letters and may have psychological problems, according to Staff Sgt. Raymond Hoy, chief of media relations with Vandenberg’s public affairs office.
After the letter was discovered at about 8 a.m. by a fourth-floor employee, the 30th Space Wing Emergency Response Team arrived to cordon off the immediate area and supervise the clinic’s closing. After roughly two hours, officials announced the letter did not contain biohazards and officials began the process of re-opening the clinic.
