CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — Camp Pendleton’s new top general says he thinks the number of his Marines stationed in Iraq will stay steady into next year.
Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland told reporters Wednesday that his troops will remain “right where we are.” He says their main mission is enhancing stability in Iraq’s Al Anbar region.
Helland took over this month as commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates says a limited pullout has already begun for five Army brigades.
