PETERSBURG, Va. — The Army has a new logistics branch based at Fort Lee in Petersburg.
About 100 Army officers pinned on a new insignia Wednesday for the new branch that unites quartermaster, ordnance and transportation soldiers.
The branch will supply, maintain and move military forces.
The Army’s transportation and ordnance schools are moving to Fort Lee as part of the Pentagon’s base closure and realignment plan. Officials say Fort Lee’s military and civilian population will grow by about 60 percent by 2013.
The inauguration Wednesday will directly affect about 10,000 Army officers from captain to colonel in rank. More than 270,000 soldiers — about one-third of the Army — serve in logistics specialties.
