THE Harry Potter books have become the novels that Americans most want to see banned - as they are seen as promoting witchcraft.
The American Library Association say city-based author JK Rowling's work has been challenged more times than any other in the last five years.
More than 3000 readers in the US have been attempted to ban the books. It is believed they are upset by the tales, which centre around the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as they are seen as promoting the occult or Satanism.
There were more challenges to Ms Rowling's books than any others on the top ten list, which included John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird and William Golding's Lord of the Flies.
