Virginia Beach City Council members Barbara Henley, left, and Belinda Nash listen as remarks are made following the unveiling Saturday of the bronze statue of Grace Sherwood, the "Witch of Pungo," at Sentara Bayside Hospital. Nash worked for the past seven years to locate a statue of Sherwood in the Bayside area of Virginia Beach. Sherwood is the only convicted witch tried by water in the Commonwealth.
Three hundred years ago, Sherwood was convicted of witchcraft when she floated after being thrown in the Lynnhaven River at what's now called Witchduck Point. On July 10, 2006 - the anniversary of her ducking - Sherwood was exonerated by Gov. Tim Kaine.
