A woman who claimed that a local nursing home fired her because of her Wiccan beliefs has lost her discrimination lawsuit against the facility.
Janet Brown-Schreiner alleged that Life Care Center of Grandview, a 170-bed adult-care home, terminated her as assistant director of nursing for subacute care after learning of her religion.
In her lawsuit, Brown-Schreiner contended that some of the supervisors and staff had complained about her Wiccan beliefs and shunned her. Three weeks after she began work, she alleged, the home’s executive director met with her and gave her the choice of resigning or being fired.
Life Care Center disputed Brown-Schreiner’s account, contending that she left voluntarily after the home’s executive director told her that some staff members were upset about her interactions with a Wiccan resident of the facility. The executive director suggested that she take that Friday off with pay, in the hope that matters would calm down.
