In the wake of last month's horrific earthquake that ripped Haiti apart, a Vodoun high priest is alleging that Christian aid organizations are discriminating against those who follow his religion. Max Beauvoir says, "The evangelicals are in control and they take everything for themselves." He claims that opponents of Vodoun have deliberately prevented medical assistance and food relief from reaching some of the more remote areas of the country.
Although Haiti is predominantly Christian, many people also honor the spirits of Vodoun, and see no problem with the two spiritualities co-existing side by side. However, since the quake there have been a number of conflicts between Christianity and Vodoun -- for starters, Pat Robertson opened his mouth and said that Haiti had earned itself the quake by making a deal with Satan. Then there were problems because the Vodoun high priests were concerned about the way bodies were being disposed of, and just the other day CNN reported that a group of American missionaries were trying to remove kids from Haiti without legal paperwork being filed.
