of H.P. Lovecraft. I had never heard of Lovecraft. Is he trying to tell me something?
Am I in the right forum?

| 2. Huge Lovecraft fan (as I suspect many here are) |

Lovecraft played an enormous role in my ethical development. That's probably a bad thing considering the other major player was Nietzsche. Anyway, Lovecraft the writer is strictly b-grade material (hey, I'm comparing him to Kafka here). Still, he was a terrific spinner of science fiction and horror tales that give you a good all over creepy feeling, especially in these ominous times.
His poetry was sometimes respectable, but he's best known for his short fiction. I'd start there, over the poetry. Only hardcore fans read his poems. His best writing was the 10,000+ letters he wrote.
