1. I cannot think of another message board to the left of DU

DailyKos is too technical. I never related to Bartcop. Salon.com has a message board, but I think you have to pay extra. DU has a culture that keeps drawing me back. Of late, it is not as compelling as it used to be. Some people who were a fixture here have disappeared.

I can think of one leftist example. I actually got into a flame war defending NPR's Terry Gross on an IndyMedia board. Those boards have about no traffic though. Maybe we should surf the communist sites.

2. I'm seriously thinking

of making one myself. It would be mainly for scientists about scientific/philosophical questions, but I would put a room on free exchanges. And it would welcome "lay" people. With a "religious people please abstain" (or you'll be kicked out).

3. There was a site like that several years ago

Called Fearsome. Course there is the www.infidels.org site. But it doesn't sound like thats what you are looking for.
