| There are three atheists where I work... |
|
Of course, I'm one of them. Well, I work at a radio station; and we had a lot of snow hit our area the week of Christmas. Our church lady couldn't make it in to to do her show for Christmas eve. Our resident atheist engineer went out of his way make sure that she made it to the station safely, and I helped her with any problems she had while she was here. The other atheist was snowbound at his house. I think she'd be shocked to know that we're atheists because we're not heartless heathens.

It goes a long way to shatter presumptions about atheists if you do not hide it and are compassionate at the same time. It creates an environment where someone that happens to be on the fence can feel safe in approaching you and asking questions. The journey from believer to skeptic can be an arduous one. There is no reason it need be made in isolation.

monopoly on compassion. I enjoy pointed out to people that every time the UK atheist population ticks up, so do charitable contributions. It's such a poisonous lie that you become less inclined to help your fellow man if you don't believe in a sky-ghost.
