| Thought I'd duck in here. |

Wrote a book review kind of intending to discuss a book. It got bogged down a bit.

I cannot abide useless people. You can ask the mods to pull off-topic subthreads via alerts.

| 3. No! It's probably a more interesting thread |
|
than a simple book discussion at this point (and I've been answering some of it too--I never realized how sticky those conversations in R/T got....)
I was just wondering, has anyone else read Pullman's book? Meaning to? Liked it?

I liked His Dark Materials, though I thought the Golden Compass movie was crap. Pullman has an...interesting take on things, so I think I'll see if I can find his book.

| 6. The movie could have been better--I thought it was visually |
|
quite good, and some of the performances as well, but I think the book was a bit too "demanding" for the movie.

once they started jumping between dimensions, I started to lose interest. Still, overall, an interesting story arc

on the off-topic subthread (which I admittedly contributed to).
This book is on my list of summer reading (being a HS English teacher, I don't get to read much for pleasure until the summer).

How can anyone say that rejection of the evidence of Jesus automatically rejects the evidence for most of history without drowning in a pool of their own drool?

I've actually been thinking about changing it to another lyric, but I haven't been able to find one quite so fitting to a message board.
Maynard rocks...:)

Love me some Danny Carey too. You ever see them live? They put on a phenomenal transcendent show. Have you heard Pucifer?

I rarely get the chance to go to concerts, but now that you've reminded me I'll have to check out Pucifer. I put it on a "new music list" a while back but never got around to it, so thanks for reminding me. :)

Tool can get a bit masturbatory for me at times, but they have some brilliant albums, and they're all fantastic musicians.
I've never seen them live, but I have seen A Perfect Circle

| 10. I'm still working out some things that I'm not sure how to counter. |
|
On one hand, one can't prove a negative, but it should be clear that data can and should be used to falsify claims that just aren't so. I think that's the one that bugs me the most. If "x" was in Des Moines during all of December, it proves X wasn't in Paris for Xmas--it's not about bias. Nor am I sure why complete lack of evidence for a claim besides someone making the claim should be seen as, well, evidence. "Q" is speculation (of Biblical scholars many of whom remain believers based on comparison of the existing texts) but Jesus in the east is a pretty good story, with or without any "fitting of facts."
I'm not going back in.

(and I preferred Russian lit) "A Separate Peace". Great book- think I will buy it again.
