Anne McCaffrey - Dragon books

Hello all,

Any Anne McCaffrey fans here?

The reason I ask is that my son just the other day mentioned he's interested in seeing the Eragon movie. I know of the book though I've never read it and I haven't thought much about it but I just saw this thread in the Lounge:

And again I know of Anne McCaffrey but never read her books. And although my son is a big dragon fan (He's got that dragonology book and other misc. dragon stuff) it never even occurred to me check to see if maybe the McCaffrey dragon stories would be appropriate for him.

I'll check it out myself of course but it's always helpful to get feedback from others.

Would Anne McCaffrey novels be appropriate reading for a 10 year old boy? He is a very advanced reader, he's read LOTR for example.

1. If he can handle LOTR

he shouldn't have any problem with McCaffrey's books (though possibly, for a 10-year-old, they may be slightly too much sexwise*)

*I'm thinking about Ramoth's first mating flight in particular (in Dragonflight; it's not what you would call graphic, but it may raise some questions about relationships you may not want to discuss at his age; the same issues also appear in many of the other books, though less obviously.

2. I was a McCaffrey fan in middle school

I pretty much ignored the subtle sex stuff and didn't notice it until I reread it in high school. The whole series is worth reading, IMO.

3. Get him the *other* trilogy

Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums....much more kid friendly, I read 'em in elementary school and loved them.

I agree, I think they'd be good choices.
