a combination of Mr. Sterling and West Wing. I found a show to watch Tuesdays at 9 PM (ET) on ABC.

It's nice to be in the West Wing again... The West Wing (the show) which I still like) is doing so much campaign stuff that it's nice to see a show that is again in the West Wing. And Geena Davis is great and I've really liked the first two episodes.

never watched west wing, so have no frame of reference-- I don't know, does west wing takes place in the current reality of dems vs. repubs?
what I enjoyed about commander in chief was it seems to be sort of a wish fulfillment fantasy, of how to get out of the current political disaster we are now mired in of corporatist fascist leaning republicans and ineffectual democrats and getting back to some kind of semblance of wise and just governance for ourselves... some reviews I read criticized her being "independent" and not identifying as dem or repub as a cop-out, but that's exactly why I enjoyed it bc it visualizes some kind of other possible future for us. Her situation of having only 2 years and not expecting re-election (& therfore not having to pander to any interests but "the good of the country") is a real interesting premise.
sometimes art (or tv or film) has a way of mirroring something going on in the collective psyche-- so who knows maybe this show will get people thinking on a subliminal level on other options... It may be blasphemy to say this on this board but I really don't think the way out of this mess is likely come from the democratic party, but rather some still undiscovered 3rd option...

There are many differences of course... However your question about "does west wing takes place in the current reality of dems vs. repubs?" In the West Wing it played more to politics being real and the stress of never being able to get things done because the other side wouldn't allow it to go through. So it was real.
But I like Commander in Chief because it is not playing to just "reality" but what could be and I like that.... some diehard WW people might find it campy but I enjoy it.

I like that she's an independent and doesn't feel she owes anything to anybody. Unles they plan to make this series last just two seasons, my guess is that she'll be successful and win re-election. She could have 10 years total. President Bartlett couldn't run again once he had his two terms.

Geena Davis is a favorite of mine and I love her in this character. Sutherland does the villain perfectly. I think this will be a show that will keep my interest.
