OK, it's not a complete theory, but I just got done watching 4 episodes I had not seen on my DVR today while folding clothes and doing other household stuff. Let me start with one premise I had going in and then one detail I noticed.
1. This show is not happening in real time. There are lots of jokes going around about Hurley not losing weight while being on the island. I do not think that the producers of the show would let that happen. They are paying too much attention to detail to let that have slipped their minds. If they wanted to, they would have made weight loss a condition of the contract. Or they would have killed the character off if the actor wouldn't/couldn't comply.
That being said, today I was watching the Sawyer "long con" episode (from two weeks ago). When Locke is going through the books, the only one we see is called "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." Now, this might be a coincedence, but I don't think so because it really isn't a book but a short story by Ambrose Bierce (sometimes me being an English teacher pays off, and I teach this short story--very good French short film of it too that was an Academy Award winner and an episode of Twilight Zone). Being it isn't a novel, I doubt there is just one left in the prop room and they went out of their way to show us the title. Basically the short story is about this guy going to be hung and the "story" he makes up in the split seconds before his death (the "story" is that the rope breaks and he makes it to freedom after a daring escape). So now my theory--which, admittedly, needs some work.
1. All of this is taking place in the mind of Locke from the time the plane starts to go down until their real death--or-- 2. The Owl Creek book was just put there as a diversion for Literature geeks like myself.
Your thoughts?

You hit something, but I don't think you got all of it. As for Hurley, the last episode has Sawyer catching him hoarding food, including ranch dressing and some bread. That could explain the weight staying on. As for the Owl Creek, I caught that too. Several DUers have discussed the owl creek idea, but I don't but that the whole thing is in Lock's mind. There is clear evidence that the mind effects things. After Walt read a comic book about a polar bear, one appeared on the island. I'm not sure how the mind of the characters ties into the island, but I do not buy that it is all in Locke's head.
Great Post and keep talking about Lost here. I love having other people to hash out ideas with. I'll talk with you after the next episode airs.

I'll probably watch it tonight. But he would have to have a SERIOUS stash of calories to keep on that amount of weight. I mean several loaves of bread a day, plus A LOT of other food. He just doesn't have that much to last 50 days.
Did the novel The Third Policeman (or something like that) show up in the first season. That is similar to Owl Creek.
Of course, it could all be a misdirection. Like the author of the novel, Gary Troup, being an anagram for purgatory.

About a plane crash in a desert. There are a group of survivors. About halfway through the movie the survivors start disappearing. They find out they are all dead and each time the rescue team removes a body from the wreckage, that person's spirit left the scene. It ends with one sad soul alone whose body lies crushed under the tail of the plane which remains in the desert.
Did anyone ever see that movie or know it's name?
I wondered if Lost had a similar theme.
It's weird how everyone is giving in to their dark side right now.
