2. Some observations about "24".

I watched the 2-hour premiere thingy last night after the games, and I really hate some of the implicit messages that are being fed to the millions of viewers of 24. For example:

The Azaz family: Hey, you always gotta watch out for those Muslim families. No matter how normal they may seem, they could be involved in a top-secret, 5-year plan for a huge terrorist attack on America.

Richard, son of Secretary Heller: Y'know all those liberal protesters out there? They're all just these angry, hippy, dope-smoking idiots that possess a "Michael Moore, 6th grade logic", as the Secretary himself put it. Did Fahrenheit 9/11 make you think? It's just wacky 6th grade logic, don't pay any attention to that. Oh, and those liberal activists - they're just "using" this Richard kid, while the Secretary of Defense is "serving his country" and "advancing the cause of freedom."

Head of CTU (can't remember her name): She's just not capable of doing her job well (like Jack can). Why, after Jack saves the day and shoots the Turkish national in the leg to withdraw information, the "bad" CTU director accuses Jack, the hero of the day, of torturing prisoners. See? All that talk about torturing prisoners, it's just hogwash. Just let 'em do their jobs, and you'll be safer. They're just trying to save lives.

I like how this Fox show takes these subtle, little stabs at liberals.

3. Give it time.

I thought the son made a good point; he was going to protest his dad's politics, as we'd all like to doin reality (though I do wish he had a haircut, or at least a shampoo).
Also, read a review about the Muslims who didn't like the way the story line was going. The mouthpieces of "24" assured everyone it's not really what you think, and perceptions will change the further along we get in the story.
As for torture, that's what Jack's good at. It is fiction...
Conversely, what's stopping a terrorist from blowing up trains? disrupting computers? And what the hell is in that case?

4. As it happens,

the show has sucked me in, so I guess I'll have no choice but to "give it time." However, the observations I had above were not the first time I've noticed these implicit messages in 24 - I saw most of the first 2 seasons, and I noticed quite a few (though none in particular come to mind - it's been awhile).

True, it's fiction, but part of the reason it is captivating is because it utilizes a topic that is very real to Americans - terrorism. I think most people realize it's just a show, but you can't deny the "wow, this could really happen" element to it as well. That is where these subtle messages are damaging, even if only subconsciously.

As far as the son - I'm not saying he wasn't making a good point, but look at how his position was depicted. Instead of making him a reasonable person with real grievances, he's a young, angry, disheveled individual, defiantly sparking a j in front of his father. Translation: disrespectful, immature, treasonous, unrealistically idealistic, unstable, etc. Don't you think they're trying to paint a picture here?

5. No doubt.

I will be totally shocked if by the end of the season, Muslim terrorists have anything to do with the plot. This is only the first couple of episodes. It'll probably end up being some scheme set up by a large American corporation. Just wait and see...

I can't wait to see what the son is going to do to his parents. His GF is kind of a cutie...I think he'll cap his parents before he hurts her.

6. I have been watching 24 since day 1

and have laughed at the bad ones and just cant stop watching no matter what. even that year that was just spawn (jacks daughter) running and bouncing through the desert.

i missed the first hour even though i thought i set my VCR but thanks to TVWithoutpity.com i cought up.

wow i missed quit an episode. they had Dad in the hostage position with guys in masks making the threat. hmmm.

ok, lets see how it plays out. that must have been a powerful image.

when i tuned in it got pretty corny. between the grocery store holdup - i swear i was hysterical. that was just funny and then the terrorMom and the tea and the little girl being drugged. and potatoe face getting arrested! it should be interesting.

7. Maybe I should give it another chance

I watched for the first time last Sunday night...and wasn't happy. When Jack shot the guy he was interrogating in the leg, that was it for me. Jack is supposed to be a good guy, right? So, why does a good guy act like a thug? For freedom? The ends justify the means? The show seemed to be promoting the "might makes right" attitude so pervasive these days.
I could be wrong.

8. never try to justify 24

one just watches it and is surprised every week by its ridiculousness. its like you sit there and say "are they nuts?" who is writing this stuff? why did they do that. oh man this is killing me! i cant watch this anymore. i have to see it next week, cant wait.

and then you go on a message board like this and make fun of it. its what 24 is for. and Kieffer is such a good actor i think its why i keep coming back.

Jack has been through a lot you know. lost his wife heroin addiction. lost his job and all his friends. been beaten to within an inch of his life. so who know why he shot the guy! maybe he is shell shocked. i dont know. i will let it play out. and see where it goes. last season was very good.

9. I finally watched all four hours from last week

A techie question: How did the - I never know their names - terrorist who grabbed the programmer, managed to listen on his cell phone call with Chloe, to know that he would be in that train station?
