Bush Approved Leak of Iraq Arms Intelligence, Libby Testified

April 6 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush authorized disclosure of classified information on Iraq's weapons program to rebut war critics, a former top administration aide told a grand jury, according to documents filed in federal court.

The documents don't allege the president approved the identification of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame, although they were filed in connection with the investigation into who leaked the operative's name to reporters in 2003. The court filing by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald also doesn't suggest Bush violated any rule or law governing the handling of classified material.

The document described federal grand jury testimony by I. Lewis Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, who was indicted last October of charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to FBI investigators probing the Plame case.

In the filing, Fitzgerald describes Libby's testimony about disclosure to former New York Times reporter Judy Miller of a 2002 National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq's pursuit of nuclear materials

What a week! I'm doing the happy dance of joy now!

I know this means that Kerry will get less attention for a while, but honestly, could the contrast between the two be any more pronounced. Kerry = Patriot who loves his country, Bush = Traitor who leaks classified info that might endanger undercover lives.

3. I agree, but my first reaction was to be near tears.

Judy Miller and the NYT likely either knew this or suspected it - They gave a traitor the election. This really really hurts. I have read the NYT since coming to the NYC area in the early 70s. Coming from the Chicago area, which did have some good papers, it still felt special to get the "paper of record" at the door step.

I wonder if it was they bought into PNAC, which Kerry would skuttle, or whether it was BCCI. On GD-P, there is a post on a WSJ article saying the "Wall street" part of Democratic party is trying to obstruct the progressive side of the party. One person mentioned in the article was Robert Altman, who was in the Clinton administration - in spite of his BCCI ties. (It scares me to some extent that my believes are now way out of the mainstream - maybe because of the perception that the mainstream may be so far from the truth.)

But I do agree with you, the contrast couldn't be more extreme if it were fiction. (I also wonder if these things bubbling under the surface are part of the cause of the rash of stupid Kerry mocking articles.) I hope that these stories, and the likely further decline in Bush's popularity (which might be that people only despise him more), may lead to more people taking the risk to stand with Kerry.

4. Now my question has been answered.

Just this morning I was wondering who was going do the ribbon cutting for that special Republican Wing of Hell currently under construction, and now I have my answer! Granted, there many other candidates, but IMO the top dog should definitely have the honor of wielding the giant pair of ceremonial scissors.

I know that being a traitor while in the White House doesn't rise to the level of say, receiving presidential blow job :sarcasm: but let's hope even Republicans can see that this is just wrong.

President Bush claims to be a straight-talking kind of guy who doesn't like to send mixed signals. I guess we know how credible that claim is:

President Bush, 9/30/03:
“There’s just too many leaks, and if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is.”

President Bush, 7/18/05:
"President Bush said Monday that if anyone on his staff committed a crime in the CIA leak case, that person will 'no longer work in my administration.'"

The Associated Press, today:
"Vice President Dick Cheney's former top aide told prosecutors President Bush authorized the leak of sensitive intelligence information about Iraq, according to court papers filed by prosecutors in the CIA leak case."

7. This seems to be the "big story'' for the moment.

Some of the DUer are so one dimensional, for them it is just all about getting Bush. Nothing else matters.

Oh, the media seems to be playing it up too. I don't mind, but Libby's testimony has been around for a while, why release this information now, when IMO, the war issue is of most importance? Is it a stall for additional time before the media does finally declare, what we all know, Iraq is in civil war. i know is sound silly, but really, what would be worse for Bush damning information out of Iraq or Libby slightly pointing a finger toward Bush.

Other stories are also big and never go away. They simmer on the stove as the overall background and consequence of everything else. Iraq is one such story.

I don't think this can be ignored. Stupid of them to think Libby would take the fall. I don't think Rove will either. I think noone wants to go to jail and when Bush fired Andy Card, it was the go ahead for the Bushies to throw him under the bus as the much vaunted "loyalty' had evaporated. Buckle your seatbelts, its going to be a bumpy ride!
