Least Favorite Christmas Songs

"Wonderful Christmas" by Paul McCartney Played in all the stores and dental offices
as a kind of torture. "Simply having a wonderful Christmas..." Nothing at all wonderful
about this song...

"Jingle Bell Jamboree" I don't know who does this but just as lame as the above
one. Sample lyric: "We can go into the other room and watch tv/or you can listen to
CDs..."

...I kind of enjoy the Paul McCartney one. :blush:

What I don't like is the fact that one of our local radio stations elects to play Christmas music ALL through November. I can walk into the deli on November 15th and hear "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." Friends, that is OBNOXIOUS (I mean the trend specifically). We don't celebrate Independence Day on Easter or give Valentines on Labor Day. This rush-rush-rush commercialization of Christmas has to stop.

This morning at Mass the celebrant pointed out that by midnight tonight, most stations will stop playing Christmas music (I suspect classical stations may not be so rigid), but we're just beginning two weeks of observing Christmas! Epiphany is observed on the 8th of January this year. So I'll keep my Christmas CDs at the ready.

4. I so agree with you!

This year the first Christmas decorations in Sydney stores began
appearing in late September. It's very sad really, because by the
time Christmas is here, people are bored with it, I really believe that.
Perhaps it's no coincidence that last week, the shops weren't crowded,
and even children didn't seem to be particularly excited. I think
Christmas is suffering from a bad case of overkill.

5. Oh, no, the Christmas pod people invaded Australia.

I had no idea it was that bad in your part of the world. I was under the impression our problems were due to the insanely commercialized nature of American life -- advertisements everywhere, focus on profits, etc.

This year I actually received my first Christmas card on November 15th or thereabouts. I was appalled (and no, the sender wasn't leaving the country or similar and sending out cards far ahead for that reason). I used to get mad when I saw Santa Claus figures up in the stores on All Saints' Day.

7. Where the U.S. goes, Australia follows.

I see the increasing commercialization of everything as part of John
Howard's Australia. The Australia I grew up in was different, but now
everybody's just out to make a buck, and the only interests that concern
the government are those of big business.

Not much room here any more for the nourishment of the soul. Instead
we have Hillsong, the church where (to quote one of their pastors)
"we like people who do life well".

I'm inclined to think that Christmas should be abolished as a national
holiday all over the world, and instead become a purely religious
observance again, like Rosh Hashana or Eid. I think it's the only way to save it.

6. I'm with you, CB

I've always liked the Paul McCartney song. :blush: However, one song that has GOT to go is "Feliz Navidad." They had a radio playing at work one weekend and the station had the gall to follow "Mary, Did You Know" with "Feliz Navidad." MAJOR shock to the system.

It seems around these parts Christmas begins a few days before Halloween. Not with the music (that kicks off on Thanksgiving Day when one of the FM stations begins its "All Christmas Music All the Time" gig), but with tree and decoration displays in the stores. My 14-year-old got thoroughly digusted by that when she and dad were out shopping one day, and was none to discreet with her comments.
