How to find work of an obscure composer Karl Eduard Hering?

His name is Karl Eduard Hering(1807-1879)and he was described by Mendelssohn as "The greatest contrapuntist in all of Europe".

Served as musical director in Bautzen Germany.

He is my great uncle and I would so love to find some of his piano music.

1. Recording or sheet music?

If you're looking for a recording there's a good chance it never has been. If you're looking for sheet music you might check to see if the original publisher is still around. I imagine it will require a lot of googling and phone calls. Of course, I've never had to do this but that's how I'd approach it. Good luck.

This CD has two pieces that were composed by my great,great,great grandfather!! I just purchased a copy!!

It turns out that my g,g,g grandfather, Karl Gottlieb Hering, and his son Karl Eduard Hering and grandson Richard Hering were wonderfully talented musically and composed a number of pieces going back as far as 1770's. I only know this because I have found a list of their music among some family papers.

I have found a number of piano pieces and 3 operas by them this week!
The Berlin State Library has a marvelous collection of works.

I'm so grateful that these works are available via Internet. Now I'm taking a crash course in German.

I can't tell you how excited I am to share this with all of my cousins and family, many of whom are very musical!

Thanks for your help!! I, too, have run across many refs to the works of Sigmund Hering. I have a nice genealogical map of the family that extend from 1700's to early 1900's, and he is not on it. I believe that he is a bit too 'recent'for me to recognize!
Strange how that works! My Hering grandfather migrated to America in 1833. So, I tend to know those on the state side best.

I have just purchased a book written by Richard Hering (son of Karl Eduard) from abebooks.com. And, I am hopeful that it may have some refs. to his father's work. Will keep you up-to-date on my progress!
