Do you have a favorite period?

Poll question: Do you have a favorite period?

It was difficult for me not to choose the Classical Period, since Mozart is my favorite composer, and Beethoven is somewhere in the top five.

But I've recently been flooding my ears with Brahms, Bruckner, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann and Tchaikovsky, so as a period, I have to go with Romantic.

My second choice is 20th Century. I've been amazed by my recent discoveries of Bartok, Mahler and Shostakovich, and have loved Copland and Sibelius for many years now.

After you vote, would you mind posting and telling me your favorite period(s)? I'm very interested in who likes what period, and why.

1. I voted for the 20th century period.

Two more favorites from that period...Samuel Barber and Vaughn Williams (I THINK Vaughn Williams was of that period.)

Copland is my favorite. If there is a quintessential American composer, who represents the values America SHOULD be about, it's Copland ("Fanfare for the Common Man" is truly representative of Copland)

2. I've always loved Appalachian Spring...

...and Vaughn Williams' third and fifth symphonies have been recommended to me as essential (but my CD budget is kind of dry for awhile).

4. I listen to many eras

Picked the Romantic as I think it's got the biggest spot in my collection though most everything is well represented save for Modern. I tend to listen to Classical music when I am programming or doing some heavy duty surfing.

Noticed however no one has talked about Medieval. In that vein, I think I've everything the Anonymous 4 has out, with _An English Ladymass_ as my personal favorite. Anyone else listen to this group?

Choral: definitely Renaissance through Bach. No contest.

I voted Baroque, but I'm rather fond of 20th century and beyond.

I'm on a big Phillip Glass kick at the moment.

I love Listz and Chopin. I'm not a musician, so I can't begin to tell you why lol. Listz often feels very chaotic to me, and that fits my personality well lol, and Chopin is the calming counterpoint I usually need.

11. I voted for 20th, but was also torn up about Romantic Period.

I remember walking up to a sculpture in a museum in DC, a bust, actually. I knew who it was before ever seeing anything written. I felt intensely drawn to Mahler's sculture by Rodin.

Used to be more into Classical Period; enjoy the 20th century stuff by Mahler, Bartok, etc.

Last night I heard Bartok's "Two Pictures" by the Chicago Symphony conducted by Lorin Maazel. It was so fabulous that I had my spouse buy a CSO recording of it for a Valentine's Day present.

12. I love the Baroque...

there is something about Bach's Mass in B minor that deeply affects my soul...I'd love to see a performance of it in an old cathedral.

I guess the Romantic period is a close second, I love just about everything Schubert has ever done!

14. This is so difficult

I love the Baroque for Choral and Bach's clavier stuff

The Classical period for Hayden and Mozart Chamber works and Mozarts beautiful Concerti and Concertantes - and Opera

The Romanitc for Dvorak Chamber works along with Beethoven's power and passion and development - and Brahms, Smetena, Puccini - My god what a choice you ask of us.

Although - I could give up most of the moderns and even the expressionist periods.

16. I'm a modernist at heart

though truthfully I like them all, though I could live happily without the classical period, and Romantic would be my second favorite.

I don't know why, but I can live without Mozart.

But I love the modern stuff: the minimalists, the avante-garde. And even the modern classical and romantic style stuff. I just like new stuff - I'm always searching out new works by living composers. It's just more exciting to me.

Had to go with Classical though, Beethoven pulled that one ahead. Although its tough since I also enjoy Mussorgsky's works as well (Pictures at an Exhibition is a long time favorite).

I'm addicted to baroque music. Oh, every once in a while I'll get tired of it....but I always go back to it. Here are my top composers:

1) Bach - the King of Baroque.
2) Handel - I can't handle a day without him
3) Telemann - he wrote thousands of pieces - very underestimated.
4) Early baroque composers, like the Italians.

23. Twentieth century, although I love music from all periods

As a teen I began with "program" music of the romantic period, simply because that was what was played on the radio. Now whenever I donate and they ask what I would like to hear I request more twentieth century music. It requires more participation, at least on my part, and it is often a kind of intellectual challenge to figure out where the composer was going.

I listen for pure enjoyment, and am not an expert by any means. I'd like to keep this group open, and will try to post more often.

Perhaps we should start a flame war. "Damn that Ives!" No, Handel sucks!" or something along those lines.

24. 20th Century and Modern.

However, I am also a HUGH!!!1111 opera fan.

I listen to music from all eras. But these days I'm getting into so esoteric modern and 20th cent stuff. Love Bartok, Berg, and stuff like that.

25. Baroque!

There is something about Counterpoint, the fugue, and the richly "ornamented" sound that stirs my soul. I like the other periods, too, but Baroque, especially Bach and Vivaldi, holds a special place in my heard.
