I listened to it earlier this morning on public radio and I was amazed how familiar it was. I don't recall listening to it in concert and did not see it among my CD collection, so I have to conclude that part of it was played in movies, certainly the Allegro.
When the Vivace non troppo was played, I smiled. I think that this was the theme music for the Sherlock Holmes mysteries that, until now, I thought was Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence.
I wonder whether there is a web page that lists classical music played in the movies. Certainly the Grieg and Rachmaninoff piano concertos, and the Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky violin concertos have been used many times. Not so much as background, as pieces "played" by the musician characters.
