Each year, Turner Classic Movies has a Young Film Composers Competition, and the winner works with professionals to compose, rehearse, and record their music for a silent film. The 2005 winner, Marcus Sjowall, will have his score for "Souls for Sale" premiering this Tuesday, January 24th, at 8 pm on TCM.
Even if you're not a silent film fan, you might enjoy this! Each of the winners' composition style has been different, and always so beautifully scored to the film. There are often little themes or leitmotifs for different characters, and little moments -- especially in comedies -- where a slight look or gesture is accompanied with a perfect little musical spark. It's such a fascinating art form in itself!
